Atlético Madrid's Julian Álvarez Transfer Future Hinges on CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín
Atlético Madrid's striker Julian Álvarez aims to leave, with CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín controlling his transfer, as Barcelona and other clubs show interest.

Atlético Madrid finds itself in a difficult situation regarding the future of Argentine striker Julian Álvarez.
Pedro Folana, a journalist and correspondent for the well-known program Carrusel Deportivo on Cadena SER radio, revealed significant updates about Álvarez's status at Atlético Madrid.
Álvarez is among the key targets for several major European clubs, with Barcelona notably seeking a player to fill the void left by Polish forward Robert Lewandowski, who announced his departure at the end of the season.
Folana stated, "Atlético Madrid is fully aware that Julian wants to leave; this is not just a feeling or intuition, they have clear information about actual movements."
He added that Barcelona previously contacted Atlético Madrid's management, proposing a deal that included a substantial sum of money plus player Ferran Torres. However, Torres declined to be part of the transfer, which means Barcelona would need to offer a large financial amount alone.
Folana emphasized that the entire negotiation and Álvarez's future rest in the hands of one individual: Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, the club's CEO. He explained, "This influential figure at Atlético Madrid directly sets the player's price and is unwilling to let Álvarez go for less than his high market value. He demands a very large transfer fee if forced to approve the sale."
According to the same radio sources, Arsenal and Paris Saint-Germain have also made initial contacts with Atlético Madrid, making them among the main clubs interested in Álvarez alongside Barcelona.
Folana clarified that the club's management understands that the push for Álvarez's departure is driven by the player's agents and inner circle seeking financial gain, confirming that "the poor relationship with coach Diego Simeone is not the reason, contrary to some reports."
He concluded, "Julian wants to leave and has given the green light to discuss his future outside Atlético. The situation will become clearer in the upcoming weeks."
Álvarez, aged 26, has not won any titles this season with Atlético Madrid, which has increased his desire to pursue a new challenge. Barcelona views him as an ideal replacement for Robert Lewandowski.
