Julian Alvarez could be sold by Atletico Madrid this summer if a record offer arrives, as the club prepares to reinvest the proceeds in key targets like Bernardo Silva and Cristian Romero. Director of football Mateu Alemany is leading the effort to reshape Diego Simeone’s squad following Antoine Griezmann’s departure.

The upcoming transfer window marks a major overhaul for Atletico after a difficult season that ended with a 5-1 defeat to Villarreal. The club finished fourth in La Liga and exited the Champions League at the semi-final stage. Alemany faces the challenge of replacing Griezmann, who is moving to MLS, while rebuilding the team.

Alvarez, signed for €75 million in 2024, has been a central figure for Atletico, scoring 49 goals in 106 appearances, including 20 this season. Despite his contributions, he has yet to win a trophy with the club.

The forward’s availability is expected to trigger significant activity in the transfer market, with interest from Paris Saint-Germain, Barcelona, and Arsenal. PSG views Alvarez as a valuable addition to their squad, which recently won the Champions League and will face Arsenal in the final.

Barcelona is monitoring Alvarez as a potential long-term replacement following Robert Lewandowski’s exit, although the club’s financial struggles complicate any deal.

Any transfer of Alvarez, whose contract extends until 2030, would require a record fee exceeding €100 million. The funds generated would allow Alemany to pursue top targets such as Silva, who is leaving Manchester City, and Tottenham defender Cristian Romero.

Romero’s signing would bolster a defense needing leadership, especially after his role in helping Spurs avoid relegation on the final day of the season. Atletico is also interested in Joao Gomes and Marc Cucurella, indicating a broad squad rebuild.

Regarding Alvarez, Diego Simeone said, "He is old enough to know what he is going to do and he will have his decision made, I imagine."

Under new ownership by Apollo, Atletico must balance a busy transfer window with spending dependent on income from player sales. Alemany is expected to coordinate departures and secure reinforcements in the coming weeks. Fans should expect a notably different starting lineup when pre-season begins as the club aims to start a new competitive phase.
