Atletico Madrid Rejects Barcelona's Bid for Julian Alvarez
Atletico Madrid president Enrique Cerezo has firmly rejected Barcelona’s attempts to sign Julian Alvarez, insisting the striker’s €500 million release clause must be met.

Enrique Cerezo, president of Atletico Madrid, has issued a clear message to Barcelona regarding their pursuit of striker Julian Alvarez, emphasizing that the player is not for sale below his release clause.
Barcelona has identified Alvarez as the long-term replacement for Robert Lewandowski under coach Hansi Flick and has prepared an offer exceeding €135 million, including bonuses, to secure the forward’s transfer. However, Atletico Madrid remains steadfast in demanding the full €500 million buyout clause stipulated in Alvarez’s contract.
Speaking to El Desmarque, Cerezo stated, "Julian is an Atletico Madrid player. Whoever wants him can come and look at the contract (the release clause), and if they’re interested, they’ll sign him; if not, they won’t. It seems like this is the story of the summer; you all know exactly how things stand. Julian is an Atletico Madrid player, and I believe he will remain an Atletico Madrid player."
This declaration effectively dismisses any possibility of Barcelona negotiating a reduced fee, despite their willingness to offer a substantial guaranteed amount plus bonuses. Atletico’s position indicates no interest in entertaining offers below the contractual release figure.
The transfer dispute has escalated into public tension, with Atletico Madrid recently mocking Barcelona’s interest by posting parody signings of Barca players such as Lamine Yamal and Pedri. Alongside this, Atletico accused Barcelona of operating a "propaganda machine" aimed at unsettling Alvarez ahead of the transfer window.
Atletico’s official statement criticized what they described as a series of "calculated leaks" intended to diminish Alvarez’s market value, warning fans not to "believe everything you see, especially if it’s related to Barca." This public hostility suggests that any future negotiations would occur under strained conditions.
Complicating matters for Barcelona, Real Madrid has also entered the competition for Alvarez. Atletico recently rejected a €150 million bid from the Bernabeu club, which was reportedly part of Florentino Perez’s promise to deliver a new Galactico following his re-election. Alvarez was reportedly the main target of this offer.
Real Madrid’s unsuccessful bid confirms that even a record offer from a rival club does not meet Atletico’s valuation at this time. With both El Clasico rivals vying for the 26-year-old forward, the price for Alvarez is expected to remain high. Barcelona now faces the choice of withdrawing from the pursuit or attempting to finance a record-breaking transfer amid ongoing financial scrutiny.
