Atletico Madrid plans negotiations with manager Diego Simeone for a contract extension as his current deal nears its June 30 expiration.

Atletico Madrid intends to engage in discussions with Diego Simeone regarding a contract renewal, according to reports from AS. The Argentine coach’s current agreement is set to expire on June 30, prompting the club’s hierarchy to prioritize securing his long-term future at the Metropolitano stadium.
The sporting directorate faces critical decisions that will shape the club’s trajectory for upcoming seasons. Internal sources indicate to AS that the primary objective is maintaining continuity with Simeone, who has been synonymous with Atletico’s modern identity since his arrival in late 2011. Despite speculation linking him to international roles or Italian clubs, the consensus within the organization favors retaining the "Cholo" as the leader of their sporting project.
Simeone has expressed that he retains the same hunger and energy present during his first match at La Rosaleda in January 2012. This enduring commitment aligns with the club’s view that he remains the optimal figure to guide the team into its next phase, eliminating any immediate need to search for a successor.
Discussions for a new deal are anticipated to proceed smoothly due to shared visions between the coach and the board. A report from AS states, “Simeone wants to stay, the club, in principle, also and the agreement should not pose a major problem for all parties.” The administrative process is expected to mirror the efficiency of his 2023 renewal, which extended his services until 2027.
However, there is no urgency to finalize paperwork immediately. The club recently executed a significant overhaul of the first-team squad, a transition complicated by the departure of Antoine Griezmann. Simeone reportedly wishes to assess how the restructured team performs early in the season before committing to another long-term cycle. Consequently, negotiations may utilize international breaks or the Christmas period, with a potential announcement possible during the winter months once the team finds its rhythm.
Marcos Llorente represents another key figure whose future requires attention. The Spanish international has emerged as a leader in the dressing room, though his contract status remains unresolved. Bayern Munich are monitoring his situation closely, considering him for midfield and defensive reinforcement given his versatility and work rate. Interest also stems from several Premier League clubs.
Despite external interest, Llorente’s personal preference is to remain at the Metropolitano. He serves as a reference point for supporters and a crucial lieutenant for Simeone on the pitch, positioning him as a vital component of the Atleti machine alongside the manager’s own tenure considerations.
