Notts County clinched promotion to League One by defeating Salford City 3-0 in the League Two play-off final, ending an 11-year absence from the third tier of English football. Key contributions from Alassana Jatta and Jodi Jones ensured a decisive victory at Wembley Stadium.

Under intense heat reaching 37 degrees Celsius, Notts County dominated the match with superior possession and precise finishing. The deadlock was broken in the 32nd minute when a rapid counter-attack initiated by goalkeeper James Belshaw culminated in Jones delivering a perfect through-ball to Jatta, who calmly finished to score his 17th goal of the season.

The crowd of over 20,000 Notts County supporters witnessed the lead double before halftime. Following a reckless tackle on Jones by Salford’s Haji Mnonga, Notts County converted the ensuing set-piece. Captain Rod McDonald controlled the ball and passed it back across the goalmouth, where Lucas Ness rose to head the ball home, putting Salford under significant pressure heading into the second half.

Despite Salford City’s ownership including Manchester United legends David Beckham and Gary Neville, the team was unable to replicate their regular-season success against Notts County, having beaten them twice previously. Salford’s hopes of a penalty were dismissed when a cross from substitute Ben Woodburn struck Jacob Bedeau’s elbow, but referee Tom Reeves did not award a penalty, leaving Salford without crucial opportunities.

Jodi Jones, the standout player of the final, secured the third goal in the 70th minute. After Conor Grant advanced down the right wing and cut the ball back, Jones anticipated the play ahead of Graydon and finished with a precise shot, effectively sealing the match.

This triumph marks a significant milestone for Notts County, the world’s oldest professional football club and a founding member of the Football League, as they return to League One after more than a decade. Salford City will remain in League Two for the upcoming season.

In the stands, cameras frequently captured the visible disappointment of Beckham and Neville, who appeared frustrated by their team’s performance. Beckham’s presence at Wembley was notable, given his history of earning 115 England caps at the national stadium. Former teammates Nicky Butt and Neville were also present, witnessing their club’s defeat at this critical stage.

Salford’s rapid progression through the non-league ranks over the past decade contrasts with the challenge they faced in League Two, highlighting the competitive nature of the division. Meanwhile, Notts County’s supporters are set to celebrate their club’s promotion well into the night as they prepare for the next season in League One.
