Matheus Cunha has maintained his strong form from his first season at Old Trafford into the World Cup, scoring three goals and standing out among Brazil’s players in the tournament.

Alongside Cunha, new signing Ederson was named in the Brazilian squad but has yet to make an appearance on the field.

Meanwhile, former Manchester United player Casemiro played a significant role for Brazil, netting the equalizer in their 2-1 victory against Japan, a result that secured their advancement to the last 16.

Mixed Reviews from Brazilian Media

Brazil, a five-time World Cup champion, overcame a disciplined Japanese team, but the local media offered varied critiques of Cunha and Casemiro’s performances.

GE Globo commented on Cunha’s involvement, noting that although he moved extensively to disrupt Japan’s defense, he had limited chances near the penalty area. The outlet highlighted a dangerous left-footed shot saved by Suzuki and observed that Cunha had minimal ball contact after Endrick’s substitution.

Regarding Casemiro, GE Globo described him as both a “villain and hero,” emphasizing that Brazil’s relief was largely due to his headed goal. However, they criticized his overall play, pointing out early struggles with marking, an early yellow card, being outplayed during the Japanese goal, and several passing mistakes.

ESPN Brazil provided a slightly more favorable assessment, awarding Casemiro a 6.5 out of 10. They acknowledged his decisive goal but noted shortcomings in his defensive role during the first half and mentioned that he left the game due to injury.

ESPN Brazil also rated Cunha 5 out of 10, aligning with GE Globo’s view that he had little impact and was effectively contained by Japan’s defense.

Both players are expected to aim for improved performances in Brazil’s upcoming match against Norway on Sunday, which will determine who advances to the quarter-finals
