Fabio Canavaro urges Cristiano Ronaldo not to retire following Portugal's 5-0 victory over Uzbekistan in the 2026 World Cup.

Portugal dominated Uzbekistan with a 5-0 victory in their World Cup 2026 match held at the "Energy" stadium in Houston. Despite the heavy defeat, Uzbekistan's coach Fabio Canavaro attracted attention with heartfelt comments about Portuguese star Cristiano Ronaldo, expressing great admiration for his exceptional career.
Canavaro, who won the Ballon d'Or in 2006, remarked, "I retired years ago, while he is still competing at the highest levels with astonishing efficiency." He directly addressed Ronaldo, saying, "Please never retire… as long as you deliver this performance, why step away from the pitch?"
The Italian coach also defended Ronaldo's decision to continue playing outside Europe, noting that football is no longer exclusive to the European continent. He highlighted that experiences in Asia and America are proving their value, similar to Lionel Messi's presence in the American league.
Canavaro concluded by describing Ronaldo as "one of the greatest players in history" who "possesses a special magnetism for attracting goals."
With this win, Portugal temporarily leads their group with four points, awaiting the outcome of the upcoming match between Colombia and the Democratic Republic of Congo scheduled for Wednesday. Portugal is set to face Colombia next Sunday, the same day Uzbekistan, eliminated after their second loss, will play against the Democratic Republic of Congo in the group’s third and final round.
