Carrick: Ego is the Secret to Success at Manchester United
Michael Carrick, Manchester United's head coach, has offered a nuanced take on ego in football, arguing it is a vital tool for high performance rather than a problem to be eliminated.

Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has challenged the conventional wisdom that ego is a destructive force in the dressing room, insisting it is actually a crucial ingredient for success at the highest level. Rather than seeking to remove it, Carrick says he aims to harness that energy for the team's benefit.
The former United midfielder was responding to a question about whether the club's recent stability stems from purging egotistical players. In remarks highlighted by ESPN, Carrick offered a distinctly different perspective. "Ego is actually funny, because I think to perform at the highest level you have to have some kind of ego," he said.
Carrick elaborated that the quality itself is not the problem, but rather how it is directed. "You need it and it can be used in many different ways, so I think the way you use it is the decisive factor," he explained.
The head coach drew on his own experience watching elite teammates during his playing days. "I think part of my experience and learning here, watching players better than me, is how they handled that and sacrificed for the team," Carrick said.
He described the key challenge as a shift in focus. "I think turning the ego from yourself to serving the team is important, and you have to have something you are fighting for and truly connected to," he added.
Carrick was careful to frame ego not as a negative trait, but as a form of pride. "I hope what I'm saying makes sense. Ego doesn't have to be something individual or negative in any way," he said. "I think it is basically pride in yourself and in what you are working to achieve. I think each of us has our own ego in different ways."
Concluding his thoughts, Carrick pointed to the visible unity within his squad. "You can clearly see the spirit, the bond and the camaraderie within the team, and everyone is working in one direction. Harnessing ego to serve the club can be incredibly powerful, and we must take advantage of that," he said.
