Mbappé provided a strongly positive character reference, describing Kone as a top-tier talent capable of meeting the physical and tactical demands of the Premier League. That endorsement formed part of the internal rationale behind Chelsea’s decision to pursue the Roma player following Enzo Fernandez’s impending departure.
The Fernandez exit and its financial scale
Fernandez completed his transfer to Manchester City in a deal valued at £125 million. His departure left a significant void in Chelsea’s central midfield, prompting the accelerated pursuit of Kone as a direct replacement.

Though Chelsea opened the season with wins over Fulham and Brighton, the absence of both Fernandez and a confirmed upgrade like Kone places immediate pressure on Alonso’s tactical flexibility.
