Alonso Details Acheampong’s Minor Injury Absence vs Sunderland
Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso confirmed Josh Acheampong missed the Sunderland match due to a minor fitness issue, with return expected after the break.

Josh Acheampong was excluded from Chelsea’s squad for Sunday’s Premier League clash against Sunderland due to a minor physical setback, according to head coach Xabi Alonso. The defender’s omission marked a significant departure from the lineup that recently defeated Manchester United.
Injury Update and Squad Selection
Alonso addressed the media regarding Acheampong’s status, stating the player is "recovering from a minor thing." The manager explained that the defender lacked the necessary fitness levels to participate in the match at Wearside. Despite this absence, the coaching staff anticipates his availability following the November international break.
The decision to leave Acheampong out came as a surprise given his recent form. He featured in eight of Chelsea’s first nine league games this season and started the previous four matches. His consistent performances had also secured him a place in the England Under-21s squad for upcoming fixtures against Portugal and France.
Defensive Personnel Challenges
Chelsea faced several defensive selection issues ahead of the Sunderland game. While Moises Caicedo was cleared to play, goalkeeper Mike Penders started in place of Emiliano Martinez, who was not risked following jaw surgery recovery. The absence of captain Reece James, sidelined until the New Year with a knee injury, had previously opened opportunities for Acheampong.
With Acheampong unavailable, Marco Palestra received a starting role. The Italian summer signing struggled during the first half of the match against Manchester United and will need to improve as he adapts to life in England. Maxence Lacroix remains out until the end of the year due to a hamstring problem, further limiting defensive options.
Right-Back Options and Future Fixtures
Malo Gusto represents another alternative on the right flank but appears lower in the pecking order under Alonso. The club considered selling the Frenchman during the summer transfer window, suggesting limited reliance on his services currently. The upcoming international break provides time for Acheampong to recover fully.
Chelsea aims to resume their campaign against Leeds United on November 21. The team hopes to have Acheampong back in contention for that fixture, allowing them to address the defensive gaps exposed during the Sunderland preparation period.
