Former Ajax Coach Farioli Criticizes Club Leadership and Exit Reasons
Ex-Ajax manager Francesco Farioli blames internal politics and lack of football expertise for his departure after one season at the Dutch club.

Francesco Farioli has attributed his exit from Ajax to internal conflicts and questionable decision-making within the club’s leadership. The Italian coach, who spent one season at the Eredivisie side, highlighted political infighting as a major obstacle to progress.
Farioli Details Turbulent Ajax Tenure
In an interview with ESPN, Farioli described a dysfunctional environment behind the scenes during his time at Ajax. Despite guiding the team close to an Eredivisie title, the club faltered late in the season, losing a strong position in the final rounds. The coach pointed to internal power struggles as a key reason for the collapse and his eventual departure.
Following his exit from Ajax, Farioli moved to Portugal where he immediately found success by winning the league with Porto in his first season.
Criticism of Ajax’s Leadership and Decision-Making
Farioli was explicit in his criticism of Ajax’s hierarchy, accusing them of engaging in political games that hinder the club’s competitiveness. He questioned the qualifications of those making sporting decisions, stating that many lacked football knowledge. "It is a huge club, but so many political games are being played, there is so much political interest and infighting within the club," he said. "Too many decisions within the club are made by people who have absolutely no football knowledge. This slowed everything down so badly."
Challenges Within Ajax’s Structure
The former coach explained that the combination of internal disputes and a lack of football vision made it impossible for him to continue. He noted difficulties in establishing effective connections within such a large club. "As I saw it, it was impossible for me to work under those circumstances," Farioli added. "Together with the people close to me at Ajax, I saw how difficult it is to establish a good connection with one another within such a big club."
Farioli’s Future After Porto Success
After securing the Portuguese league title with Porto, Farioli is now focusing on strengthening his squad ahead of the summer transfer window. Porto has already signed Arsenal defender Jakub Kiwior on a permanent deal. Additionally, Sky has reported that the club has shown interest in Barcelona’s Robert Lewandowski as a potential signing.
