Former USMNT Star Says Portugal Performs Better Without Ronaldo at World Cup
Taylor Twellman claims Portugal's strongest World Cup squad may be more effective without Cristiano Ronaldo on the field.

As the 2026 World Cup nears, discussions intensify over Cristiano Ronaldo's impact on Portugal's national team. Despite being the top international goalscorer, former USMNT striker and analyst Taylor Twellman has expressed the view that Portugal might play at their best when Ronaldo is not on the pitch.
Twellman shared his perspective during an appearance on Get Up ESPN, stating, "This is the best team Ronaldo's ever had around him for Portugal going to the World Cup. I think Portugal is at their best if he doesn't play."
Portugal's Extensive Talent Pool
The case for a lineup without Ronaldo is supported by Portugal's current squad depth. Unlike past tournaments where Ronaldo carried much of the scoring responsibility, manager Roberto Martinez now has access to several high-caliber players such as Bruno Fernandes, Bernardo Silva, and Rafael Leao. Additional attacking options include Goncalo Ramos and Pedro Neto, indicating the team’s frontline can operate effectively without relying solely on their 41-year-old captain.
On the defensive side, Portugal's lineup is equally strong. Ruben Dias leads the backline, supported by Nuno Mendes and Joao Cancelo, forming a defensive unit that is widely respected by opposing coaches. This collective capability has led to suggestions that Portugal might adopt a more dynamic, high-pressing style, which may not align with Ronaldo’s current physical condition.
Ronaldo’s Final World Cup Opportunity
At 41 years old, Ronaldo is preparing for what is likely his sixth and final World Cup appearance. This tournament offers him a chance to claim the one major international title that has so far eluded him. While Lionel Messi arrives as the reigning champion with Argentina, Ronaldo continues his pursuit of an international triumph that would define his career.
Despite the debates, Martinez has publicly supported Ronaldo’s inclusion in the squad. The coach also emphasized the emotional importance of having experienced players like Ronaldo on the team as Portugal faces group stage opponents DR Congo, Uzbekistan, and Colombia.
Group Stage Expectations for Portugal
Portugal enters the World Cup as strong favorites to lead their group, but the pressure on Martinez to balance legacy and performance remains significant. The team aims to surpass their previous World Cup result, which saw a quarter-final exit against Morocco. Ronaldo’s presence ensures that every tactical choice will be closely examined, particularly if Portugal struggles to establish their rhythm early in the tournament. Notably, the best World Cup finish during Ronaldo’s era was a fourth-place result in 2006.
