Inter’s derby slump: Barella’s stats and comments spark concern
Nicolò Barella’s declining statistics and critical post-match remarks following Inter’s 3-1 derby loss highlight internal issues beyond mere fitness.

Nicolò Barella emerged as the focal point of criticism after Inter Milan’s 3-1 defeat in the derby, a result that extended their winless streak in the fixture to seven matches. While several players struggled with fitness at the Giuseppe Meazza, the Italian midfielder drew particular scrutiny for both his on-field errors and his subsequent comments regarding manager Cristian Chivu and the squad’s attitude.
Derby performance under scrutiny
Barella’s contribution during the match was rated poorly, with an average score no higher than 4.5. Observers described his play as "off-key" and "slow," noting he took too many touches. Each of AC Milan’s three goals coincided with uncharacteristic lapses by the midfielder. He arrived late to defend against Pulisic’s headed goal, failed to track Rabiot who launched an attack from Barella’s position, and lost possession while attempting to clear the ball, leading to a foul converted by Moreira.
Statistical decline since last season
Data indicates a sharp drop in Barella’s key metrics compared to the previous campaign. Although his average distance covered per match remains consistent, his sprint running has halved, falling from 13.7 to 7.8. His tackles decreased from 1.6 to 1.1 per game, and ball recoveries dropped from 4.9 to 4.3. Notably, he committed two errors leading to opposition goals this year, versus zero last season. In possession, he loses the ball more frequently (12.2 times per match versus 11.9), and his predicted xAssists have plunged from 6.62 to 1.74.
Comments raise internal concerns
Barellas’ post-match interviews with Sky and DAZN suggested deeper issues within the dressing room. He stated, "Since the start of the year, we've lacked the right attitude. That's a bad thing." He acknowledged fatigue but emphasized the need for mutual accountability, noting, "We need to look each other in the eye." The midfielder also critiqued tactical choices, suggesting that a lack of fresh attacking substitutes influenced the manager’s decisions and caused the team to lose its sense of certainty.
A pattern of public criticism
The midfielder’s remarks follow similar public statements from teammates Alessandro Bastoni and coach Cristian Chivu ahead of recent matches. Bastoni urged realism before the Champions League clash with Shakhtar, while Chivu called for a return to a "provincial" mentality due to the derby drought. Barella’s outburst, however, mirrors the PR crisis triggered by Gleison Bremer’s comments at Juventus. Chivu later confirmed the team’s deficit in hunger, highlighting a lack of shared purpose that poses a greater threat than individual poor starts or missed recovery opportunities.
