Joao Palhinha is prepared to accept a significant reduction in salary to secure a transfer back to Sporting CP this summer. The midfielder, currently on loan at Tottenham Hotspur from Bayern Munich, has prioritized returning to the club where he initially rose to prominence following a challenging season in the Premier League.

Sporting CP has identified Palhinha as the main target for their midfield restructuring ahead of the 2026-2027 season. At 30 years old, Palhinha is seen as the preferred successor to captain Morten Hjulmand, who is expected to leave the Lisbon club during the summer transfer window. Negotiations to bring Palhinha back to Alvalade are already in progress.

According to A Bola, the club’s management and coach Rui Borges have specifically requested the return of the Portugal international. Although the player’s market value presents difficulties, Palhinha’s emotional connection to Sporting and his wish to be closer to family in Portugal have motivated him to push for the transfer. To make the move possible, he is reportedly willing to reduce his current earnings to the lowest acceptable level.

The primary challenge in finalizing the deal is Palhinha’s high salary. Under contract with Bayern Munich until June 2028, he earns a gross annual salary of approximately €9 million. This figure is generally considered unattainable for Portuguese clubs, making Palhinha’s readiness to accept a pay cut a crucial factor in the negotiations.

Sporting is currently attempting to persuade Bayern Munich to release the player. The club is exploring two main options: negotiating a transfer fee within their budget or arranging a loan deal that includes a future purchase clause. Since Palhinha’s personal terms are aligned with his desire to return, the focus remains on reaching an agreement between the two clubs.

Despite Tottenham Hotspur’s difficult Premier League season, Palhinha’s individual performance has maintained his strong reputation. Spurs finished 17th and narrowly avoided relegation on the final day, but Palhinha was one of the few standout players. He played a key role in their survival campaign, scoring seven goals and providing two assists in 45 appearances across all competitions. Although Palhinha has expressed a wish to remain at Tottenham, reports from A Bola indicate he now prioritizes a return to Portugal.

Tottenham head coach Roberto De Zerbi has expressed his desire to keep Palhinha permanently following the loan spell. De Zerbi has urged the club to activate the £26 million buy option included in the agreement, considering the midfielder a central figure for Tottenham’s rebuilding efforts next season.

De Zerbi praised Palhinha’s character and leadership throughout a demanding campaign, describing him as the kind of “reliable” player Tottenham needs moving forward. “One hundred per cent; we have to start with those types of people,” De Zerbi said when asked about retaining the midfielder beyond the summer. It remains uncertain whether Tottenham will compete with Sporting for Palhinha’s signature.
