Jurgen Klopp stands as the leading candidate to become the new head coach of Germany's national football team, following the resignation of Julian Nagelsmann. Over recent years, the 59-year-old coach, known for his strong charisma, has been regarded as the ideal choice for this role. In recent weeks, he has been referred to as the "awaited coach."

After Nagelsmann confirmed his resignation, Klopp’s appointment appears to be a formality, especially after the German Football Association (DFB) announced the start of negotiations and confirmed that Klopp had expressed "initial readiness" to take on the position.

Germany’s recent World Cup performances have been disappointing, with the team exiting at the group stage twice in the last three tournaments and being eliminated in the round of 32 after a loss to Paraguay in the most recent edition.

While Germany’s showing at the 2024 European Championship was more positive, the national team has not achieved a successful tournament since Euro 2016. For a team that has won the World Cup four times and the European Championship three times, a decade of underwhelming results falls far below expectations and ambitions.

Long-Awaited Coaching Prospect

Klopp’s potential appointment as Germany’s coach has been discussed for a long time. Even in late October 2024, when he assumed the role of "Global Head of Football" at Red Bull, reports indicated that his contract included a clause allowing him to become Germany’s head coach in the future or that he had an honorary agreement enabling him to do so.

During the current World Cup, Klopp’s role as a technical analyst on Magenta TV brought him closer than ever to this position. His analyses received widespread praise for their accuracy, but he sparked speculation when he said, "Fortunately, Julian Nagelsmann is the one who chooses the lineup... for now."

The phrase "for now" generated much conjecture about Nagelsmann’s future. Although Klopp later apologized for the remark, many felt he was aware that his appointment was imminent.

Following Germany’s defeat to Paraguay, Klopp refrained from discussing the national team’s coaching position, stating that the time was not yet right to address the matter.

Speaking on Magenta TV, Klopp said, "When the next tournament comes and the coach, whoever it is, is asked about their goal, if they don’t say: winning the European Championship, people will ask: don’t you have ambition? We are Germany! The truth is we were Germany, a football powerhouse. To regain that strength, we must give our utmost."

In his role at Red Bull, Klopp has provided "strategic vision and support" and contributed to "coach development." However, his involvement in the dismissal of RB Leipzig coach Oli Werner after just one season—despite Werner leading the team to third place in the Bundesliga and Champions League qualification—drew media criticism.

Klopp’s Popularity and Coaching Record

Klopp’s success as a coach, combined with his friendly personality and lively spirit, has made him one of the most beloved figures among football fans in Germany. He ended his playing career at Mainz in 2001 at the age of 33, immediately taking over as the team’s coach and leading them to promotion to the Bundesliga for the first time in 2004. His departure to Borussia Dortmund in 2008 was an emotional moment, with Klopp and many fans shedding tears.

With Borussia Dortmund, Klopp won back-to-back Bundesliga titles and guided the team to the 2013 Champions League final, narrowly losing to Bayern Munich. He then spent nine years at Liverpool, ending the club’s long wait by winning its first English league title in over 25 years and leading them to the 2019 Champions League trophy.

Klopp has a history of leading clubs with strong working-class roots to success, maintaining a connection to their core values. Alongside his comprehensive coaching style, he is considered one of the world’s top managers.

During his time away from coaching, Klopp received Germany’s highest civilian honor in recognition of his contributions to supporting democracy and his significant impact on football. He has been regarded as a role model, football ambassador, and a figure who improved Germany’s international image, particularly in the United Kingdom.

Recently, Klopp’s face has become highly recognizable, bolstered by his appearances in numerous commercials, making him one of Germany’s most famous personalities beyond just football coaching.

Preparing for Euro 2028 and Upcoming Matches

With Euro 2028 scheduled to take place in the United Kingdom and Ireland, Klopp will be familiar with many of the stadiums and the football culture in those countries. However, he will have a long preparation period before that tournament.

His first match as Germany’s coach is set for September 24 in Amsterdam against the Netherlands in the UEFA Nations League. This match will mark the start of a new international break format. Unlike previous years, which had three international breaks lasting two weeks each in September, October, and November, the 2026-2027 season will combine the September and October breaks into one, while the November break remains unchanged.

This means Klopp’s initial tenure will begin during an extended three-week international break in late September. Germany will face Greece in Augsburg three days after the Amsterdam match, followed by a game against Serbia in Munich four days later, and will conclude the break with another match against Greece in Thessaloniki on October 4.

The longer break will provide Klopp with an opportunity to start strongly, establish a clear playing style, and identify the key players who will form the core of the German national team.

Although the official announcement of Klopp’s appointment may take some time, German fans are already envisioning how their team might look under his leadership. The "heavy metal" football style or "loud football," a term Klopp famously used to describe his approach, seems poised to return to a team currently in need of regaining its rhythm.
