Fabrizio Romano reports a Manchester United executive advocates for Brighton coach Fabian Hurzeler as a potential replacement for Michael Carrick.

A specific member of the Manchester United leadership group is actively promoting the appointment of Brighton & Hove Albion head coach Fabian Hurzeler, according to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano. This internal advocacy occurs as the club navigates a difficult start to the current campaign under manager Michael Carrick.
In a recent update on his YouTube channel, Romano confirmed that one official within the club’s hierarchy holds Hurzeler in high regard. The journalist stated that this individual introduces the 33-year-old’s name into discussions regarding managerial vacancies and talented coaches. However, Romano clarified that no decision has been made to dismiss Carrick. These conversations are precautionary measures to ensure the club is not caught unprepared should drastic actions be required in the coming weeks.
Crucially, Manchester United have not yet initiated contact with Hurzeler or his representatives. Romano identified three other candidates currently under consideration: Antonio Conte, who has indicated willingness to return to management mid-season; Julian Nagelsmann, who is currently without a club; and Eddie Howe. The report highlights that while interest exists, formal negotiations remain absent.
Michael Carrick secured a permanent contract after leading the team to a third-place finish and Champions League qualification earlier this year. He took over from Ruben Amorim in January, enjoying a strong initial period. Despite this success, the club’s performance in the new season has intensified scrutiny on his position. Manchester United currently sit 13th in the league table, having recorded only one victory in their first six Premier League matches.
The team also suffered an elimination from the Carabao Cup at the hands of Brighton, despite holding an early two-goal lead. This result contrasts sharply with Brighton’s status as a surprise contender this season, where they have achieved notable results across domestic competitions and the Conference League. Hurzeler has received praise for his meticulous work at the Seagulls, attracting attention from several top-tier clubs.
The situation draws comparisons to events from two years ago, when Manchester United dismissed Erik ten Hag and persuaded a young manager to leave a successful project to manage chaos at Carrington. That move proved detrimental to Ruben Amorim’s career trajectory, although he subsequently secured the AC Milan job in the summer. Hurzeler represents an even younger profile than Amorim was at the time, though he possesses Premier League experience, having coached Brighton for nearly 100 games since joining in 2024.
Current sentiment suggests the club requires a highly experienced manager with a proven track record capable of optimizing underperforming players. This perspective positions Antonio Conte as arguably the most suitable candidate among those named. The debate centers on whether appointing another young coach like Hurzeler risks repeating past errors or if it offers a viable path forward amidst ongoing instability.
