Manchester United manager Michael Carrick faces pressure ahead of the Aston Villa match, with interest in potential replacements reportedly cooling.

Carrick’s tenure at Old Trafford remains under scrutiny as Manchester United prepare to host Aston Villa in the Premier League. The manager aims to sustain momentum from a dramatic midweek comeback victory against Roma while securing his position through the upcoming international break.
The Independent reported that enthusiasm for Eddie Howe and Julian Nagelsmann has diminished significantly. These two names had previously been considered leading candidates should Carrick be dismissed. Consequently, United, currently positioned in the bottom three, remain in a state of uncertainty regarding their managerial future.
Unai Emery, who leads the visiting side, appears poised to reject any move to Old Trafford. He intends to continue developing his restructured squad at Villa Park. Emery emphasized his commitment to maintaining consistency and building positively within the club.
“They decided, speaking with us last year, to build a new stand to add more supporters at Villa Park. That is a clear step forward to get better,” Emery stated. He highlighted the process of increasing budget and revenue through European participation, player development, and strategic sales to acquire young talent.
Emery also noted a productive meeting with Nassef Sawiris. “I had a good meeting with Nassef Sawiris, very good meeting, very positive. Let’s talk next week, trying to get everything we spoke about together,” he said. The discussion focused on strengthening the project through a deal.
Carlos Baleba will miss several weeks due to a hamstring injury sustained during the match against Roma. The £70m signing is unlikely to return before the international break concludes. Manager Michael Carrick confirmed the timeline, stating, “We don't know, but it will be a number of weeks... It'll be a little bit longer than that.”
Baleba left the field in tears after pulling up early in the second half on Tuesday. His absence extends beyond Sunday’s fixture against Aston Villa. He is expected to miss the trip to Anfield on 22 November and the Champions League encounter with Sporting CP three days later.
With seven games scheduled in December, including a visit to Arsenal on December 20, it remains unclear if Baleba will recover in time. The 22-year-old has started only five matches since joining from Brighton, having also missed the season opener with an ankle issue.
Sources indicate that United’s hierarchy is paralyzed by indecision over Carrick’s future. No one appears willing to make a definitive call, compounded by a lack of clarity regarding a suitable replacement. While Christoph Vivell is reportedly a fan of Julian Nagelsmann, other officials are aware of Bayern Munich’s negative assessment of his tenure there.
Nagelsmann’s reputation suffered due to poor player response to his approach and personality. The image of him arriving at training on a skateboard persists, creating doubts about his suitability for the role. Meanwhile, interest in other alternatives faces specific obstacles.
Eddie Howe is viewed less favorably than public perception suggests. Sebastian Hoeness is highly rated, yet appointing him would require a significant leap similar to Ruben Amorim’s move from Stuttgart. Fabian Hurzeler might struggle without Brighton’s structural support amid higher stakes, and compensation costs pose a financial question.
Cesc Fabregas is performing well at Como but is not expected to leave soon. He is widely regarded as Mikel Arteta’s eventual successor at Arsenal. United now face back-to-back Premier League defeats against Emery’s unbeaten side, whose striker Nicolas Jackson has scored five goals in his last five appearances.
