Pardew: Carrick’s Fernandes snub backfired in Bournemouth loss
Former Newcastle manager Alan Pardew criticized Michael Carrick for benching Bruno Fernandes during the 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth, arguing it was a tactical error.

A controversial selection choice by Manchester United head coach Michael Carrick drew sharp criticism from former Newcastle United boss Alan Pardew following Sunday’s 3-0 loss to Bournemouth. The decision to leave captain Bruno Fernandes on the bench, despite the team trailing and needing offensive output, sparked debate over managerial judgment and squad dynamics.
Tactical misstep against Bournemouth
Carrick opted not to deploy his Portuguese playmaker even as United chased a goal in the second half. Instead, he introduced Joshua Zirkzee, Matheus Cunha, Lisandro Martinez, and Shea Lacey from the substitutes’ bench. This move followed public questioning of Carrick’s tactics by Fernandes after last week’s humiliating 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como.
While Carrick initially dismissed the friction as minor, his lineup against Bournemouth appeared to signal a disciplinary stance. The strategy failed, resulting in another heavy defeat that left United languishing in 16th place in the Premier League, only two points above bottom-side Sunderland.
Pardew’s critique of pride
Speaking on The Final Word, Pardew argued that excluding Fernandes was counterproductive. He suggested Carrick should have prioritized winning over asserting authority. “I’m thinking I would have played him, personally,” Pardew stated. “There is this other side of the football coin where you go, you don’t cut off your nose to spite your face.”
Pardew emphasized that strength can be demonstrated through performance rather than exclusion. “You could still be strong by playing him. You say, ‘well, yes, I heard what he said. In my opinion, he’s wrong and I’m still not finished.’ There might be some discipline coming his way on the back of a win, if you know what I mean.”
Contextual uncertainties remain
The former Newcastle manager acknowledged he lacked insight into internal training ground interactions. He questioned whether specific incidents occurred between the coach and player since the Como match. “So you could turn it around a little bit and still win as the manager, but I don’t know what’s gone on on the training ground. Has Fernandes disrespected Michael on the bus, on the training ground from that evening to this game?”
Pardew noted that without knowing if staff reported negative comments about Carrick’s competence, definitive judgment was impossible. “Was there an incident? Was he sort of going, ‘the manager isn’t good enough’ in the background and the staff have told him? All those things I’m not privy to, and unless I was, I can’t make that decision. I can only give you the foresight of what happens.”
Historical parallel with Joey Barton
To illustrate his point, Pardew referenced his own experience managing Joey Barton at Newcastle. On his first day, Barton allegedly told him he was unfit for the role. Despite this disrespect, Pardew selected Barton for the subsequent match against Liverpool, which they won.
“So that’s an example where I could have just left Joey out. He’s not with me, I’ll leave him out. So you can use it, but you have to understand where you were. I watched Joey that week in training. He was on it, he was up for it. I could see that. So I knew that actually his playing side of it, he was going to give us something.”
Pardew concluded that the current situation mirrors that dynamic, noting that losing while omitting key players exacerbates existing problems. “And I think that the whole Fernandes one now is in leaving him out and losing the game now becomes even more of an issue.”
Fernandes’ statistical contribution
Bruno Fernandes has recorded four goals and one assist across 11 appearances in all competitions this season. His absence from the starting XI against Bournemouth coincided with a significant drop in United’s league standing.
Carrick faces mounting pressure at Old Trafford, with reports suggesting his tenure is precarious. Turning the club’s fortunes may require reconciling with Fernandes and leveraging his capabilities fully.
