Mauro Júnior locks Brazil future, ending Dutch eligibility
Brazilian defender Mauro Júnior confirmed his international allegiance to the Seleção, ruling out any potential switch to the Netherlands national team.

The debate over Mauro Júnior’s international allegiance has concluded. The PSV Eindhoven player explicitly stated that representing the Netherlands is no longer a possibility, affirming his commitment to the Brazilian national team.
Definitive choice for Brazil
In an interview with ESPN, the versatile defender and midfielder dismissed rumors linking him to the Dutch squad. "That is over, I think. I know that for sure," he said regarding the prospect of playing for the Netherlands. He emphasized that his lifelong ambition remained tied to his country of birth: "My dream has always been to play for the Brazil national team."
Mauro clarified that while speculation existed, his preference was never in doubt. "There were some rumours about the Netherlands national team, but of course it has always been my dream to represent Brazil," he explained. "That is the country where I was born and the country I want to play for." This declaration removes any uncertainty for head coach Xavi, who no longer needs to consider calling up the PSV star.
Eligibility rules and recent caps
Since joining PSV in 2017, Mauro held eligibility for the Netherlands. Had he chosen to switch, he could have applied for a Dutch passport without forfeiting his Brazilian nationality. However, he has now solidified his status with the Seleção, accumulating three caps. These appearances include matches against Australia in September, where he both started and came off the bench, as well as a game against India in which he recorded an assist.
The connection to these early milestones remains personal. Mauro revealed that he has reserved a specific spot at home for the jersey worn during the Australia match. "It is at my home. I have already had all my team-mates sign it. It will get a special place," he noted.
Focus shifts back to Eredivisie
With his international path clearly defined, attention returns to club duties. PSV prepares to resume their campaign in the Vriendenloterij Eredivisie on Friday. The Eindhoven-based side is scheduled to host sc Heerenveen in a home fixture.
