Mbappé Misses Penalty as Real Madrid Loses 1-0 to Real Betis; Club TV

Real Madrid registered its first loss in four matches, succumbing 1-0 to Real Betis in Matchday 4 of La Liga. The defeat followed three consecutive victories.

According to Spanish newspaper AS, Real Madrid TV highlighted refereeing errors from the match against Real Betis. The channel maintained that Bartra’s foot touched the penalty area line at the moment Mbappé struck the ball — and that Bartra subsequently moved fully inside the area, directly affecting the play.

The broadcast included on-screen analysis: “We see Mbappé approaching the penalty spot… the goalkeeper anticipates the shot and blocks it… and of course, we all watched in disbelief when the decision was made… he was informed via VAR — in this case, Ángel Iglesias Villanueva notified referee Hernández Hernández about whether…”

The channel also pointed to Real Betis player Héctor Bellerín, stating one of his feet appeared to be touching the penalty area line during the same sequence.

Criticism of Referee Consistency and VAR Protocol

Real Madrid TV issued sharp criticism of the officiating performance, describing referee Hernández Hernández’s conduct as inconsistent and expressing astonishment that he appeared unfamiliar with the laws governing his profession.

The channel added: “If this had happened in a Barcelona match, the penalty would have been retaken. Had Carlos Espí scored for Barcelona, the goal would likely not have been disallowed.”

Real Madrid TV asserted that the failure to order a retake stemmed either from oversight or lack of competence. While the referee insisted Bartra did not touch the line, the club argued that even if no contact occurred, Bartra used the ground to launch himself — thereby interfering with the play.

The channel further criticized the VAR official for failing to alert Hernández Hernández that a retake was required under VAR protocol, concluding definitively: “The penalty should have been retaken.”
