Mbappé to Prioritize Champions League Over Ballon d’Or, Analyst Says
Journalist Laraniaga predicted Kylian Mbappé would choose winning the UEFA Champions League with Real Madrid over claiming the Ballon d’Or, citing Mbappé’s stated desire to become part of the club’s history.

Spanish sports journalist Laraniaga weighed in on Kylian Mbappé’s potential priorities, suggesting the French forward would opt for a UEFA Champions League title with Real Madrid rather than the individual accolade of the Ballon d’Or.
The collective versus the individual
Laraniaga made the assessment during his appearance on the program “El Partidazo de COPE,” framing the question as one of collective club legacy versus personal recognition.
He grounded his prediction in Mbappé’s own public statements expressing a wish to become part of Real Madrid’s historical narrative. According to Laraniaga, securing Champions League glory with the Spanish club would deliver a team achievement that permanently inscribes Mbappé’s name in the institution’s annals.
Laraniaga approached Mbappé’s position objectively, stating it was unreasonable to assume the player publicly declares one intention while privately holding its opposite. On that basis, he affirmed Mbappé’s stance appears unambiguous: “He will choose the Champions League,” anchored in the forward’s openly declared aim to leave a mark on Real Madrid’s history — where, as Laraniaga put it, “names are immortalized in this way.”
Why the Ballon d’Or remains compelling
At the same time, Laraniaga acknowledged an alternative perspective: the Ballon d’Or carries strong appeal for many footballers due to its explicit focus on individual distinction. Its association with the winner’s name and image may lead some players to view it as a more direct and personal form of historical commemoration than a team-based trophy like the Champions League.
