Michael Carrick set for permanent Man Utd manager talks
Manchester United are expected to begin formal talks with interim manager Michael Carrick about the permanent role before their final game.

Formal discussions between Manchester United and Michael Carrick over the permanent manager's job are expected to begin within days, before the club's final match of the season at Brighton on May 24. The 44-year-old, who took over as interim boss in January after Ruben Amorim's dismissal, has guided the team to third in the Premier League table and secured a Champions League return.
According to Sky Sports, United are now ready to open talks with Carrick about taking the role on a full-time basis. He has been a frontrunner throughout the search process, and the club's hierarchy currently view him as their 'first choice' for the position.
On-field results and squad support
Carrick's record since taking charge — 10 wins from 15 games — has been a major factor. Under his leadership, United have collected 33 points from those 15 league matches, the highest tally of any Premier League side in that period. Notable victories include wins over Manchester City, Arsenal, Liverpool, Aston Villa, Chelsea, and Tottenham.
The board has also been impressed by Carrick's popularity with the squad, his media handling, and his understanding of the club's heritage. While United have deliberately taken time to consider multiple candidates rather than rushing an appointment, sources indicate no significant obstacles are expected in reaching an agreement with Carrick.
Previous managerial experience
This is not Carrick's first stint as a caretaker at Old Trafford — he previously filled the role in 2021 after Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's sacking. He later took charge of Championship side Middlesbrough in 2022, becoming the longest-serving manager in the second tier before being dismissed in June 2025 after missing the play-offs.
As a player, Carrick made 464 appearances for United, winning five Premier League titles and the Champions League in 2008. The club has not completely ruled out appointing a different manager, but talks with Carrick are expected to take place first.
