The debate surrounding Kylian Mbappé at Real Madrid has shifted from technical performance to behavioral integrity, creating a rift with the Santiago Bernabéu faithful. The central question now facing the club is whether any authority figure, including manager José Mourinho, can effectively control the French star.

Remote rehab sparks fan outrage

While official channels maintain that Mbappé operates with full club approval, supporters perceive an isolated player acting independently. This disconnect was highlighted by his recent recovery protocol following an injury sustained against Turkey. Unlike teammates who undergo rehabilitation at Valdebebas, Mbappé limited his on-site presence to brief medical examinations before continuing treatment remotely. This deviation from standard procedure drew sharp criticism in local media and social platforms.

Tensions escalated further when footage emerged of Mbappé riding a bicycle shortly after Mourinho issued a general directive prohibiting such activity for professionals. Although the Portuguese coach did not name Mbappé specifically, the timing reignited discussions about the striker’s dedication. Mourinho’s current priority involves optimizing the partnership between Mbappé and Vinícius Júnior, a combination previous managers failed to unlock.

Past controversies resurface

Fan frustration extends beyond recent events, rooted in a series of off-pitch incidents since Mbappé’s summer 2024 arrival. In October 2024, cameras captured him at a Stockholm nightclub during an international break where he had missed play due to muscular issues. Last March, a trip to Paris for knee specialist consultations became overshadowed by images of dinners with his partner. Reports alleging that medical staff examined the wrong knee prompted a public denial from Mbappé on 25 March, though he acknowledged communication failures contributed to the misunderstanding.

The most damaging perception formed last May, when photographs showed Mbappé aboard a yacht in Sardinia with his partner. This occurred while his teammates were battling to delay Barcelona’s title celebrations ahead of a decisive Clásico. Such instances have reinforced narratives suggesting he disappears during critical moments. His absence from key fixtures, including the Copa del Rey exit against Albacete in January and a match on 10 May, further sharpened these criticisms.

On-field friction and leadership gaps

Public disagreements have also marred his tenure. Following the Oviedo match on 14 May, Mbappé claimed coach Arbeloa identified him as the fourth striker, a statement Arbeloa denied. On 21 April, Bernabéu spectators jeered him after the European elimination by Bayern Munich. By 7 September, Mbappé questioned why only he and Vinícius faced scrutiny regarding defensive responsibilities.

Despite statistical evidence of his goal-scoring prowess, the team has not secured major trophies, and individual performances among stars like Vinícius Júnior have declined. Fans demand qualities statistics cannot measure: visible commitment, leadership, and willingness to shoulder responsibility during adversity. A famous quote attributed to Mbappé, telling Raúl Asencio that being a Real Madrid player is a round-the-clock obligation, is viewed by many as applying primarily to lower-profile squad members.

Villarreal clash as referendum

Attention shifts to Saturday 10 October, when Real Madrid hosts Villarreal after the international break. This fixture follows a derby defeat and serves as a litmus test for Mbappé’s standing. His participation remains uncertain pending recovery progress. If he features, the match will act as a direct referendum from a fanbase unwilling to offer leniency, despite Mbappé’s repeated suggestions that he remains indifferent to external pressure.
