Santos secured a 2-2 draw against league leaders Flamengo after Neymar scored two penalties within six minutes of coming on as a substitute.
Santos earned a dramatic 2-2 draw against Flamengo in Matchday 29 of the Brazilian championship. The result lifted Santos to 42 points, placing them eighth in the standings, while Flamengo retained their position at the top with 61 points following five consecutive victories prior to this stalemate.
Veteran star Neymar emerged as the pivotal figure, scoring both goals for Santos within a six-minute window after entering the game from the bench. His intervention came when his team was trailing, and he converted two spot-kicks in the 81st and 87th minutes to salvage a point.
The match began with challenges for coach Jardim’s side, though technical quality gave them an edge before halftime. Flamengo opened the scoring through Danilo, who finished a well-executed attack inside the box following a precise pass from Pedro. Just before the break, Lucas Paqueta headed home a cross from Carrascal to level the score at 1-1.
During the interval, coach Cuka made a strategic change by substituting Coutinho for Neymar. Santos pressed forward aggressively, but Flamengo’s defense held firm until a controversial incident occurred involving Jorge, who stopped the ball with his arm.
The referee initially awarded a free kick and issued a yellow card to the midfielder. However, after a Video Assistant Referee (VAR) review, the decision was overturned to award a penalty and show a direct red card to Jorge.
Neymar calmly executed the first penalty, providing momentum for Santos. This surge led to a free kick near the box, which Neymar took using a pre-planned tactical routine that resulted in another penalty, this time won by Gabigol.
Neymar successfully converted the second penalty past goalkeeper Rossi, who failed to anticipate the shot direction. The match concluded with 14 minutes of added time, during which Flamengo played with ten men due to the earlier red card.
