Paraskevas Antzas Dies at 49 After Battling Motor Neurone Disease
Paraskevas Antzas, former Olympiacos and Greece defender, has passed away at 49 following a fight with motor neurone disease.

Paraskevas Antzas, who played regularly in the Champions League with Olympiacos and represented Greece internationally, has died at the age of 49 after battling motor neurone disease (MND).
During his tenure with Olympiacos, Antzas secured seven Super League titles and three Greek Cups, establishing himself as a key figure in the club’s success. Olympiacos expressed their sorrow, stating, “Olympiacos FC, with a sense of sorrow, bids farewell to a great man and footballer, Paraskevas Antzas, who honoured the red and white jersey with passion, strength and dignity.”
The club added, “His presence left a strong impression on the field of play and on everyone who knew him. We express our sincere condolences to his family and loved ones. Let the soil that will cover it be light.”
Antzas began his professional career at Pandramaikos before transferring to Xanthi. His move to Olympiacos in 1998 marked the peak of his playing years. In 2003, he retired unexpectedly due to family reasons but soon returned to the game by signing with his hometown team, Doxa Drama.
Although he participated in the qualifying matches for Euro 2004, Antzas was not selected for the final Greek squad that won the tournament. He rejoined Olympiacos in 2007 and ultimately retired from professional football in 2009, announcing his decision through a statement on the club’s official website.
Social media has seen an outpouring of tributes following his death. One tribute read, “This one hurts. Perhaps one of the most underrated players in modern Greek football. An incredible centre-back. Rest in peace.” Another message said, “Sad news. RIP to Antzas Thoughts & prayers with his family,” while a third remarked, “We're living through unbelievable situations. I can't believe it. From my idols at Olympiacos and so young. Truly, truly, truly such a shame.”
