Mauricio Pochettino, who now leads the United States national team, expressed astonishment at both the scale of the violations and the inconsistent application of rules across clubs.

Inconsistent punishments for rule breakers

The Argentine coach highlighted the disparity in how different teams are treated when they violate regulations. He pointed specifically to Nottingham Forest and Everton, noting that these clubs faced points deductions or financial fines for their infractions. According to Pochettino, determining a fair penalty becomes extremely difficult when a club is convicted on nearly every charge brought against it.

"It is extremely difficult to determine a fair punishment when someone is found guilty of 114 out of 115 charges," Pochettino stated. He emphasized that other clubs breaking similar rules received distinct forms of sanction, raising questions about the uniformity of enforcement within the league.

Questions regarding regulatory oversight

In remarks made to the website Foot Mercato, Pochettino characterized the situation as delicate and surprising, particularly given the nature of the verdict. He questioned the integrity of the controls that permitted such extensive breaches to occur between 2009 and 2018. The case remains subject to ongoing legal disputes despite the reported findings.

"It is legitimate to question the controls that allowed such breaches to happen, and that is what astonishes me most," he said. His comments reflect a broader skepticism about the mechanisms designed to monitor financial compliance among top-tier clubs.

Recalling strict restrictions at Spurs

Pochettino drew a direct comparison with his time at Tottenham Hotspur, where the club faced significant sanctions under his tenure. Chief among these was an 18-month transfer ban imposed by authorities. He contrasted this rigorous enforcement with what he perceives as leniency shown toward other institutions.

"Why were the controls so strict with us and lenient with others?" Pochettino asked. He argued that the inconsistency makes the entire system appear murky, suggesting that the standards applied to different clubs lack transparency and fairness.

The US national team head coach concluded that no single punishment can fully repair the damage caused if the allegations are true.
