In an unexpected move, Tottenham Hotspur's Argentine captain Cristian Romero flew back to London from Argentina to attend his team's decisive final match against Everton on Sunday, foregoing the Argentine Primera División Apertura final between his childhood club Belgrano and River Plate.

Although the 28-year-old defender is confirmed to miss the game due to a knee injury, Romero chose to be present at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium to support his teammates in a critical encounter. A victory would secure Tottenham's place in the English Premier League, while a draw might suffice because of their superior goal difference over West Ham United.

Romero's initial decision to return to Argentina to continue his rehabilitation program, aiming to be ready for the upcoming World Cup, sparked widespread criticism despite the club's medical staff approving the move.

Former Tottenham captain and coach Glenn Hoddle labeled the decision a "scandal," and ex-striker Teddy Sheringham described allowing the Argentine defender to leave the club at such a crucial time as "unbelievable."

Earlier in the week, head coach Roberto De Zerbi defended Romero's choice, stating it was made in agreement with the medical team. However, he acknowledged that he "understands 100%" why fans were upset about the situation.

The Italian manager declined to comment on Romero's future with the club, suggesting that developments regarding the player's status might occur after the season concludes.
