Preparations are accelerating for the upcoming election of the president of the Fédération Internationale de Football Association (FIFA), amid mounting pressure on incumbent Gianni Infantino and the emergence of prominent figures potentially entering the race against him.

FIFA Governance Tensions Fuel Candidacy Speculation

Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim Al Khalifa — president of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) and first vice-president of the FIFA Council — has surfaced as one of the most prominent potential candidates to contest Infantino’s bid for re-election.

This speculation arises against a backdrop of growing friction between the AFC and FIFA’s leadership, particularly following FIFA’s rejection of the “FIFA Forward Enterprise” proposal. That initiative sought to sell a stake in the commercial rights of FIFA tournaments to private-sector investors.

The AFC joined UEFA and CONCACAF as key federations criticizing the proposal and calling for an urgent review of FIFA’s governance mechanisms.

Salman’s Public Stance and Institutional Tenure

Sheikh Salman voiced strong opposition to the proposal, stating that its presentation method and lack of consultation with member associations were unacceptable. Subsequently, the AFC aligned itself with calls for an immediate governance review within FIFA.

The Bahraini official brings extensive experience in continental football administration, having served as AFC president since 2013. He was re-elected in 2023 for a third term, which runs through 2027.

He previously ran for FIFA president in 2016 but lost to Infantino.

Election Timeline and Competitive Landscape

Reports indicate Sheikh Salman may be among the most viable figures capable of mounting a competitive challenge to Infantino, alongside CONCACAF president Victor Montagliani.

The race remains open, with candidate nominations due by 18 November 2026. The FIFA presidential election will be held on 18 March 2027 in Rabat, Morocco.
