Spain’s top-flight league postponed Celta Vigo’s opening match against Osasuna on Sunday due to severe fungal damage to the Balaídos pitch, rescheduling it for Thursday, 27 August.

The Spanish Football League officially postponed the scheduled Sunday match between Celta Vigo and Osasuna—the league’s opening fixture—after the pitch at Balaídos Stadium was found unfit for professional football. The decision followed coordination among the league, both clubs, and the Royal Spanish Football Federation.
A fungal infestation struck the Balaídos playing surface during the previous week. A technical team appointed by the league inspected the field and confirmed it failed to meet minimum safety and performance standards required for top-tier matches. The club’s technical staff affirmed the pitch no longer satisfied the mandatory conditions for hosting professional football games.
The fixture has been rescheduled for Thursday, 27 August. Urgent maintenance and treatment work will be carried out on the pitch in the coming days to restore its structural integrity and ensure readiness for the new match date.
Three other matches were also postponed: Real Madrid versus Real Sociedad, Athletic Bilbao versus Barcelona, and Valencia versus Real Betis. These delays stem from the involvement of players from all six clubs in Spain’s squad at the FIFA World Cup, with their participation extending through the tournament’s final. Those three fixtures are now set for 25, 26, and 27 August respectively.
