England secured a 1-0 victory over New Zealand in Tampa, but Thomas Tuchel expressed dissatisfaction with the team's tactical execution during the first half of the match. The German coach described their play as "freestyle" football, diverging significantly from the structured approach he expects.

Tuchel, who has managed Chelsea and Bayern Munich, emphasized his preference for the second half, where England adhered more closely to their positions and played with greater speed and intensity. He noted, “The first half we were out of positions and it was a bit too much freestyle. That slowed our game down and made it difficult for the counterpress because we were not in the positions that we wanted to be when we started attacking. That’s basically the story of the match.”

Concerns Over Tactical Discipline

The coach’s main frustration stemmed from the players not following the tactical drills practiced during their training camp. Instead of executing the collective patterns Tuchel has emphasized since becoming England’s manager, the team resorted to long balls and individual decisions.

Tuchel elaborated on the issues, stating, “We were lacking width so players were coming inside and narrowing ourselves down and slowing ourselves down and changing positions for too long. We were taking crosses, a lot of long-range shots, normally not our style of play. We played a lot of long balls, we played a lot of long passes. That was not part of training in the last four days.”

Bellingham’s Impact and Kane’s Decisiveness

Jude Bellingham’s introduction in the second half brought a noticeable improvement in England’s tempo. Returning from injury, the Real Madrid midfielder replaced Morgan Rogers and injected energy into the team. Tuchel praised Bellingham’s performance, highlighting his decisiveness and intensity as key attributes.

“Jude has the decisiveness and he has the bite,” Tuchel said. “This is a key characteristic. You can see that he comes back from an injury and is full of energy and happy to be back on the pitch. He had his break, unfortunately, in a decisive part of the season. But you can see now that he is actually in a sweet spot. He comes back, he’s fresh, he wants to play and he’s in top shape.”

Regarding Harry Kane, who scored the winning goal and reached 79 international goals, Tuchel remarked, “He’s always there to score. It’s a decisive goal. Harry is in top shape and I think that when the pressure comes and the tournament starts, that will bring the best out of all our players.”

Adapting to Environmental Challenges

The intense heat in Tampa also affected England’s performance, with the Florida sun testing the players physically. Tuchel acknowledged the difficulty but stressed the importance of acclimating to such conditions ahead of the World Cup.

“We had one training in the sun and now this match felt really, really odd,” Tuchel commented. “But it’s good that we’re exposed because that’s why we’re here. We wanted it that way and we need to get used to it because it will come at some point.” England is scheduled to play a final friendly against Costa Rica in Orlando on Wednesday.
