Massive Fire on Chinese Port Ship.. And a New Player Enters the Scene

At least 20 people died on Wednesday following a fire on a foreign cargo ship in Qingdao port, eastern China, while five others remain missing, according to official media reports Thursday.

China's state television network CCTV reported that of the 42 people on board the vessel, 12 were successfully evacuated, while five injured individuals were taken to hospital for treatment, noting their conditions are stable.

Data from Liberia’s Maritime Shipping Registry (LSEG) identified the vessel as a 20-year-old dry cargo carrier named "Ocean Melody," flying the Liberian flag and operated by Yuanyangkongben Shanghai Ship Mgm, while Hui Li Shipping Limited is the registered owner.

LSEG data showed the ship arrived at the Qingdao shipyard on August 31 and has remained there since.

According to Xinhua News Agency, Chinese President Xi Jinping called for intensified search and rescue efforts, a swift investigation, and measures to hold responsible officials accountable.

The shipyard is under the control of China State Shipbuilding Corporation (CSSC), one of the world’s largest shipbuilding companies.
