Van Dijk offers free transfer to Barcelona; Flick remains hesitant

Virgil van Dijk has reportedly signaled his willingness to join Barcelona on a free transfer during the upcoming summer window. The Dutch defender’s current contract with Liverpool expires on June 30, allowing him to leave without any fee for the Catalan club.

Flick’s reservations regarding age

Despite the financial appeal of a costless signing, El Nacional reports that head coach Hans Flick is not convinced by the prospect of bringing in the 36-year-old center-back. The German manager believes that integrating a veteran of Van Dijk’s stature could require an adaptation period and might limit playing time for younger squad members.

Flick’s hesitation also stems from his focus on developing talents from La Masia, such as Gerard Martin. The coach prioritizes long-term squad evolution over short-term reinforcements, making him cautious about acquiring an established star who may not fit the team's future trajectory.

Preferred defensive targets

According to the report, Flick favors pursuing younger options to strengthen the central defense. Names currently circulating within the club’s recruitment strategy include Alessandro Bastoni, Rod Nystad, and Nico Schlotterbeck.

In scenarios where the board insists on an experienced profile, Flick reportedly views Aymeric Laporte as a more suitable candidate than Van Dijk. This preference highlights the coaching staff's reluctance to sign the Liverpool captain despite his proven technical quality and leadership credentials.
