Vinicius Junior's Future at Real Madrid Amid Mourinho's Return
Vinicius Junior faces uncertainty at Real Madrid as Jose Mourinho's return raises questions about their working relationship and the forward's contract extension.

Jose Mourinho's anticipated comeback to Real Madrid has sparked intense discussion, particularly concerning Vinicius Junior's position at the club. The Brazilian forward, who experienced a season marked by remarkable goals and controversies, now faces the challenge of adapting to Mourinho, who previously criticized his behavior during a European competition.
Mourinho is expected to sign a three-year contract to manage Real Madrid again, contingent on Florentino Perez securing victory in the presidential election scheduled for June 7. Although Mourinho has a history of success in Madrid, his return prompts scrutiny over his compatibility with Vinicius, especially following a public disagreement earlier this year.
The discord originated during a Champions League knockout match in February when Mourinho, then Benfica's coach, clashed with Vinicius. The forthcoming chapter of Mourinho’s tenure will largely depend on how he handles the 25-year-old forward, whose role as the club's leading talent has been questioned amid internal salary talks and the recruitment of stars such as Kylian Mbappe.
Regarding Vinicius’s commitment to Real Madrid, sources indicate "strong signs" that he intends to remain with the club. His current contract extends until 2027, but negotiations for an extension have slowed down. The forward seeks a financial package that aligns with his status as the team's foremost player, especially after his consistent contributions during transitional periods before the club's recent significant investments.
Vinicius has described Real Madrid as "the club of my dreams," yet Mourinho’s arrival could influence his decision if their relationship fails to develop positively. The success of their collaboration and whether Mourinho offers the "unwavering support" Vinicius requires amid external pressures will be pivotal in the upcoming La Liga season.
The tension between Mourinho and Vinicius traces back to an incident at Estadio da Luz during a Champions League fixture. After scoring a remarkable goal, Vinicius received a booking for his celebration and claimed he was subjected to racial abuse by Benfica player Gianluca Prestianni. This led to a 10-minute halt in play and a temporary walk-off by Vinicius and teammates, triggering UEFA’s anti-racism measures.
UEFA later imposed a six-match suspension on Prestianni for a homophobic insult but found insufficient evidence regarding the racial allegation. Mourinho’s reaction, however, attracted criticism as he appeared to question Vinicius’s conduct, stating: "You score a goal from another world, why celebrate like that? The same thing always happens in so many stadiums. He’s an out of this world player, I love him. Vinicius tells me one thing and Prestianni tells me another. I want to be balanced."
Mourinho further complicated matters by suggesting that Vinicius provoked the crowd, saying: "Yes. I believe so. It should be the crazy moment of the game, an amazing goal. Unfortunately [he was] not just happy to score that astonishing goal. When you score a goal like that, you celebrate in a respectful way."
To defend Benfica against accusations of racism, Mourinho referenced the club’s history, noting: "When he was arguing about racism, I told him the biggest person in the history of this club [Eusebio] was black. This club, the last thing that it is, is racist. They [Vinicius and Prestianni] told me different things. But I don't believe in one or another. I want to be an independent."
