Regular daily intake of at least 1,000 milligrams of vitamin C reduced severe cold symptoms by 15% compared to placebo, according to a 2023 meta-analysis that pooled data from ten placebo-controlled trials. The analysis included 2,736 healthy participants—adults, children, and athletes—who took the supplement consistently, not just after symptom onset.
The 2023 study measured reduction in severity using “days confined indoors” as its primary outcome—a metric the authors explicitly acknowledged as a limitation. Vitamin C did not shorten the duration of mild cold symptoms. A separate 2013 meta-analysis found that doses around 200 mg per day did not lower cold incidence in the general population, though it did reduce cold frequency among athletes and army personnel. That same analysis reported an 8–14% reduction in symptom severity for children and adults taking vitamin C regularly—but no benefit when supplementation began only after cold symptoms appeared.
Linus Pauling, who won the 1954 Nobel Prize in Chemistry and the 1962 Nobel Peace Prize, published a book in 1970 linking vitamin C to cold prevention. Though not trained in dietetics or infectious disease medicine, he recommended 1,000–2,000 mg daily for general health and higher doses for cold prevention. His claims drew initial support from a placebo-controlled study of children at a Swiss Alps ski camp, followed by his review of four additional studies. Critics later identified mathematical errors in his analysis, reliance on low-quality trials, and disproportionate emphasis on the ski camp research.
The Australian recommended daily intake of vitamin C for adults over 19 is 45 mg—equivalent to half an orange, three to four florets of cooked broccoli, or one-third of a glass of orange juice. Pauling’s suggested 1,000–2,000 mg daily dose approaches or reaches the upper safety limit: while Australia has not set a formal upper limit due to inconclusive evidence, national guidelines reference expert consensus advising adults not exceed 1,000 mg per day; the U.S. upper limit is 2,000 mg per day.
Continual intake above 1,000 mg per day carries documented risks, including gastrointestinal disturbances such as diarrhea, nausea, stomach cramps, and bloating. It also increases oxalate excretion—potentially raising kidney stone risk—and enhances iron absorption, which may cause tissue damage in individuals with undiagnosed hemochromatosis. Interactions have been reported with radiation therapy, chemotherapy, and cholesterol-lowering statin medications. Medical guidance advises consulting a GP before starting supplementation and limiting doses to under 1,000 mg per day.
Less than 4% of Australians are vitamin C deficient.
