Ophthalmologist Oxana Kuznetsova underscores the essential role of vitamins A, C, and E in maintaining normal eye function. Deficiencies in these nutrients are linked to impaired night vision, dry and fatigued eyes, retinal damage, and cataract formation.
Why good visual acuity does not equal overall eye health
Kuznetsova explains that confirmed vitamin deficiency may warrant — and often requires — physician-supervised vitamin supplementation. However, such supplements do not correct pre-existing vision problems. At the same time, insufficient intake of certain vitamins and trace elements, alongside other factors, can contribute to the development of specific eye diseases.
She notes that vitamin A is especially vital for vision: its deficiency can hinder sight under low-light conditions and prolong recovery time after exposure to bright light. Yet she cautions against unsupervised use, warning that excessive intake of retinol poses health risks.
Antioxidant protection for the retina
Vitamins C and E possess antioxidant properties that help shield the retina from oxidative stress. As a result, they are included — along with zinc, copper, lutein, and zeaxanthin — in pharmaceutical formulations designed for certain eye conditions.
These formulations are not intended for general vision enhancement. They are prescribed specifically for patients diagnosed with intermediate-stage age-related macular degeneration. Healthy individuals are not routinely advised to take them unless clinically indicated.
Blueberries and eye health: what the evidence says
Kuznetsova acknowledges the common association between bilberries (Vaccinium myrtillus) and eye health. These berries contain vitamins C and E, small amounts of beta-carotene — which the body converts into vitamin A — and carotenoids including lutein and zeaxanthin. They are also rich in anthocyanins, plant pigments with antioxidant activity responsible for their dark color.
Some data suggest anthocyanins may reduce eye strain and improve visual recovery following exposure to bright light.
No universal vitamin formula for eyes
The ophthalmologist stresses there is no single vitamin complex suitable for all eye types. Determining whether nutritional supplementation is needed — and if so, its composition and dosage — must be done by a physician, based on individual ocular status and any confirmed deficiencies.
