Infrared saunas are popular among athletes for post-exercise recovery, but evidence shows they mainly provide temporary relief without accelerating muscle repair.

Infrared saunas have become increasingly popular among athletes and fitness enthusiasts as a method to aid recovery after workouts and alleviate muscle soreness and fatigue.
These saunas operate by using panels that emit infrared radiation to directly heat the body, allowing them to function at lower temperatures compared to traditional saunas. Although heat exposure can promote blood vessel dilation and activate certain cellular responses linked to tissue protection, this does not necessarily translate into faster muscle repair.
Research indicates that heat may enhance comfort and reduce pain perception, but there is no strong evidence that it decreases muscle damage or speeds up the restoration of strength and physical capacity following exercise.
A 2025 scientific review analyzing 14 studies found mixed results regarding whole-body heating after exercise. Some studies reported limited benefits, while others showed no clear effects. The quality of evidence ranged from low to moderate due to varying research methodologies and concerns about bias.
In a 2023 study involving basketball players, a session in an infrared sauna following resistance training helped reduce pain sensation and slightly improved jumping performance. However, it did not enhance sprint speed or leg strength, nor did it affect markers of muscle damage or sleep quality.
Researchers suggest that any immediate performance improvement may stem from increased muscle temperature, resembling a warm-up effect rather than accelerated recovery.
Heat exposure might offer additional advantages, such as assisting athletes in adapting to hot environments when used regularly, but this benefit is distinct from promoting faster post-exercise recovery.
Overall, infrared saunas may provide a sense of relaxation and temporary pain relief but should not replace established recovery methods like adequate sleep, proper nutrition, and hydration.
Caution is advised when using infrared saunas, especially for individuals with heart conditions, as heat can cause temporary drops in blood pressure and elevate heart rate.
