Russian scientists develop algae-based immune support drink
Novosibirsk State Technical University researchers created a plant-based beverage using brown algae compounds to provide antioxidant and immunomodulatory benefits.

Researchers at Novosibirsk State Technical University, working with an industrial partner, have developed a plant-based drink derived from brown algae compounds found in the Mediterranean Sea. The formulation is designed to offer both antioxidant protection and immune system support.
The role of L-fucose sugar
The beverage’s core ingredient is L-fucose, a natural monosaccharide extracted from brown algae. Studies indicate that this specific sugar possesses immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant properties. According to a statement from the university’s press office, the team created a compound enriched with low-molecular-weight L-fucose particles sourced from the brown alga Fucus vesiculosus.
This product was developed using a specialized technique that isolates biologically active components without chemical agents. The method preserves the original structure of these components while ensuring high bioavailability.
Gut health and microbial balance
Victoria Betts, the project manager and director of the Center for Research and Training in Biopolymer Technologies at the university, explained the biological function of L-fucose. She noted that it serves as a fundamental component of the intestinal lining, protecting the gut from harmful bacteria. For probiotic bacteria, L-fucose acts not only as a significant energy source but also stimulates their active reproduction.
Betts added that consuming the sugar releases short-chain fatty acids. These acids nourish intestinal epithelial cells and activate immune cells within the body.
Current veterinary application
The product is currently designated for veterinary use as a dietary supplement for animals. However, the research team stated they are prepared to introduce a version of the drink in the future. This potential iteration would serve as an active prebiotic supplement intended to support human intestinal microbiota balance.
