Seven everyday habits—including using comedogenic cosmetics, squeezing pimples, wearing tight gear, and chronic stress—can trigger or aggravate acne, according to Verywell Health.

Acne breakouts are not solely tied to adolescence or hormonal fluctuations. A range of routine daily practices can heighten the likelihood of developing acne, from skincare and haircare products to hair removal methods, repeated skin friction, psychological stress, and insufficient rest.
Per information published by Verywell Health, seemingly ordinary personal care habits may obstruct pores or irritate the skin, increasing susceptibility to new pimples—or worsening existing ones. Certain makeup, skincare, and haircare items contain ingredients known to contribute to pore blockage, a condition referred to as cosmetic acne.
These lesions commonly appear on the forehead, cheeks, and chin, and may present as whiteheads or small raised bumps. Attempting to conceal active acne with makeup does not resolve the underlying issue and, in some cases, further occludes pores and intensifies breakout severity.
Sun protection remains essential to shield skin from ultraviolet radiation damage. However, not all sunscreen formulations suit individuals prone to acne. Dermatologists recommend lightweight, non-comedogenic options specifically formulated for sensitive or acne-prone skin—particularly for those experiencing recurrent pore blockage or frequent breakouts.
Shaving or using depilatory products can inflame hair follicles, resulting in small skin bumps that may be clinically indistinguishable from acne. Additionally, accumulation of hair, sebum, dead skin cells, and bacteria near the skin surface raises the risk of pore obstruction and subsequent pimple formation.
Manually pressing, picking, or repeatedly touching pimples ranks among the most counterproductive habits for managing acne. This behavior can amplify inflammation, cause open wounds or crusting, and significantly increase the probability of scarring and post-acne marks. Resisting the urge to manipulate lesions is therefore a critical component of acne management. This phenomenon extends beyond apparel and equipment: holding a smartphone against the face for long durations or frequently touching the face may also provoke cutaneous irritation in susceptible individuals.
Hormonal shifts play a central role in acne development. Elevated testosterone levels, for example, stimulate increased sebum production, predisposing pores to blockage. In women, acne flares often coincide with menstrual cycles, pregnancy, or postmenopausal transitions.

Psychological stress affects more than mood; it directly impacts skin health. Stress prompts heightened cortisol secretion—the body’s primary stress-response hormone—and associated physiological changes may exacerbate inflammatory processes, including those involved in acne pathogenesis.
