Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Beri stressed that the success of the anticipated direct negotiations today in Washington hinges on a "real ceasefire," warning that "not stopping the fire means the destruction of everything."
Beri affirmed in an interview with the Lebanese newspaper "Al-Diyar" that Lebanon "accepts nothing less than the withdrawal of the Israeli occupation army, then reconstruction, the deployment of the Lebanese army, and the return of residents," emphasizing that "the return of residents, for me personally, is equivalent to 'In the name of God, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.'"
Beri announced that Lebanon will move to sue Israel for its "crimes and aggressions," confirming the documentation of everything it committed in the south.
He also rejected the idea of a meeting between President Joseph Aoun and the Israeli Prime Minister, noting that this matter "is not on the table for President Aoun."
Beri opined that Lebanon needs a "regional and international umbrella" for stability, especially a "Saudi-Iranian understanding on Lebanon under an American umbrella," and revealed discussions with Prime Minister Nawaf Salam regarding making amendments to the current government, but the latter put the matter "on the shelf," considering that the time is not appropriate.
