Security sources in Tel Aviv have disclosed concealed objectives behind the Israeli army's insistence on crossing the Litani River and constructing five bridges over it. The river is considered by Hezbollah as a crucial geographic and strategic line, which Israel has not approached since the Second Lebanon War, known as the "July War" in 2006, according to Hebrew media reports.

The sources told the "Netsiv" website that Israel’s goal in crossing the river is no longer limited to pushing Hezbollah away from the contact line with Israel, but also aims to inflict significant damage on Hezbollah’s internal formations.

They explained that crossing the river enables Israel to control and substantially hinder Hezbollah’s freedom of movement. This is particularly critical given that the militia relies heavily on freedom of movement from the northern to the southern Litani for much of its logistical infrastructure, including warehouses, transportation routes, and command centers in southern Lebanon.

Israel also believes that crossing the Litani River sends a message to the United States and Lebanon amid ongoing negotiations between Tel Aviv and Beirut mediated by the U.S., indicating that Israeli operations beyond the Litani serve as a military pressure tool in shaping any future agreement.

According to the Hebrew website’s sources, by crossing the river, Israel becomes better positioned to establish a deep security zone in Lebanon. This aligns with Israeli reports studying the possibility of maintaining security control or broad operational freedom not only along the border but extending to and beyond the Litani River.

The circulated information about Israel building five bridges over the Litani conveys a strong impression of the Israeli army’s readiness for a prolonged military operation north of the river. These bridges aim to ensure continuous passage for heavy forces, supplies, and rescue operations. Militarily, this measure prepares for securing extensive areas and maneuvering on a wider scale, rather than conducting quick raids.

The sources concluded that the most significant aspect is that the Israeli army’s current activity is not confined to the border strip. It also demonstrates Israel’s capability and boldness to operate in a region considered for years as Hezbollah’s "strategic defense line" in southern Lebanon, according to the Hebrew website’s sources.
