Macron and Al-Shar: Lebanon's Role in Syria-France Diplomatic Talks
Syria's President Al-Shar and France's Macron agreed to resume ambassador exchanges, highlighting economic cooperation and Lebanon's security link to Syria.

Syria's President Ahmed Al-Shar announced an agreement with French President Emmanuel Macron to initiate the exchange of ambassadors "as soon as possible," following the closure of the French embassy since 2012 after the outbreak of the Syrian conflict.
Speaking at a joint press conference with Macron after a visit described by Damascus as "historic," Al-Shar stated, "I am pleased to announce today our agreement to begin the process of exchanging resident ambassadors between Damascus and Paris at the earliest opportunity, signaling the full restoration of diplomatic relations."
Al-Shar strongly condemned "the systematic Israeli attacks," adding, "We rely on an active French role to halt this escalation and to respect international charters," as reported by Agence France-Presse.
He expressed the desire for France to be "an economic partner for Syria," noting that "those who invested early in Syria gained early," and described the strategic partnership with France as "a model for the relationship we want with the world."
Al-Shar further explained, "We are building a modern investment environment governed by institutions," and confirmed, "We are working on banking reforms to ensure smooth operations." He also indicated that "Syrian industrial cities are preparing to become new platforms for global investments," inviting foreign companies to participate in reconstruction through genuine partnerships.
Regarding Lebanon, Al-Shar emphasized that "the stability and security of Syria are linked to the stability and security of Lebanon, and vice versa."
French President Macron referred to the longstanding ties with Syria and affirmed to Al-Shar, "We stand with you and renew our confidence in the Syrian people who have shown the world they are united and undefeated."
Macron stressed the necessity for the state to control all Syrian territories and announced, "We have decided to exchange ambassadors between Paris and Damascus." He also asserted that Hezbollah must disarm and that Israel must withdraw from Lebanon.
He acknowledged that "there are many challenges facing Syria, but there are also opportunities for our companies." Macron added that "France is ready to assist in rebuilding the Syrian banking sector," emphasizing that "our goal is to build new trust in Syria and help restructure the economy." He concluded by noting that "France is a reliable partner that can be predicted in its actions toward Syria and has always supported the interests of its people."
