A Message from Karami: Education Is Not a Target in War!
Lebanese Minister of Education Riya Karami emphasized that education must not be a target or casualty of war, calling for global protection of schools, students, and teachers.
On the International Day to Protect Education from Attack, observed today on September 9, Minister of Higher Education and Education Riya Karami delivered a message affirming that "education is not a target in war, nor should it be a price paid for it."
She stressed that "protecting schools, students, and teachers, and ensuring safe access to education and continuity of learning, is not solely the responsibility of the Ministry of Education, but a duty of the state and the international community," urging for "respect for international law and accountability for those responsible for violations against educational institutions, learners, and staff."
She clarified that "continuity of education during crises is not a luxury, but a component of protecting the child themselves, and while the location of the school may change, the classroom may move, and children may be forced to flee, the child's right to education must remain unchanged."
She concluded by affirming that "protecting education means more than safeguarding buildings—it means protecting children, teachers, communities, and their ability to recover and build the future after war ends."
