Paris Conference and the Fate of UNIFIL Between Peace and King Abdullah
Lebanese Prime Minister Najib Mikati met with Jordan's King Abdullah II, discussing ongoing support for Lebanon and efforts to secure international backing for its armed forces. The leaders emphasized the need for continued coordination and diplomatic action to prevent escalation.
Prime Minister Najib Mikati met with His Majesty King Abdullah II of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan, in the presence of Crown Prince Hussein bin Abdullah II, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Youssef Raja, and Deputy Prime Minister and Jordanian Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Ayman al-Safadi.
Mikati thanked King Abdullah II for Jordan's continuous support of Lebanon and its institutions, particularly the Lebanese Army, commending Jordan's efforts in organizing a special round of the "Aqaba Meetings" initiative in Paris recently to mobilize international support for the army and internal security forces.
Discussions also covered follow-up on the outcomes of the recent Paris meeting attended by His Majesty the King and Presidents Joseph Aoun and Emmanuel Macron.
The two sides affirmed the importance of continuing Lebanese-Jordanian coordination and intensifying diplomatic efforts to de-escalate tensions and prevent further confrontations in the region.
The meeting also addressed the necessity of ensuring that UNIFIL, upon completion of its mandate, is succeeded by an internationally backed force capable of preventing any vacuum, and of mobilizing the necessary international support for Lebanon in this context.
