President Salam Finalizes Relations with Syria: Mutual Sovereignty, Reciprocity, and Safe Return of Refugees

Prime Minister Najib Salam affirmed that Lebanon is working to build a new relationship with Syria based on mutual respect for the sovereignty of both countries, shared interests, and non-interference in each other’s affairs, noting efforts to review previous bilateral agreements and establish the principle of reciprocity in several areas.

Regarding Syrian detainees in Lebanese prisons, Salam clarified that transferring Syrian nationals to their home country to complete their sentences is part of implementing a Lebanese-Syrian judicial agreement, similar to existing arrangements with other countries.

He emphasized that this step does not represent a concession on Lebanese sovereignty or an outright release of convicts, contrary to attempts to portray it in such a manner.

On the issue of Syrian refugees, Salam pointed out that the government has developed a plan to facilitate their dignified and safe return to their homeland, noting that consultations and cooperation have taken place with the Syrian government and international support has been mobilized for this return.

He added that the government has put an end to years-long disputes over the exchange of information regarding Syrian refugees.
