Security Agreement Paving the Way for Peace... What's New in the Rome Negotiations?

Information from MTV in Rome indicates that Israel has rejected the idea of new experimental zones before establishing a clear verification mechanism and completing work in existing experimental zones, particularly Fron and Souria.

It added that "Israel still opposes a major European force serving as the third party, including Italy, due to these countries' positions toward the Israeli government, but Italy's role is not absolutely ruled out. Israel favors selecting the third party from countries with good relations with it, and several nations have expressed readiness, including Indonesia, Azerbaijan, and Britain, which are currently preparing a document outlining the required tasks for the third party to send to interested countries."

The information noted that "the American side was the one who initially proposed during the negotiation session to embed the southern agreement within a UN resolution to strengthen it. The talks have led to a near-agreement on military concepts, particularly clearance and verification, after significant differences in definitions had previously existed."

It pointed out that "the current effort is focused on establishing an implementation mechanism for the framework agreement, with a security agreement to be signed after the mission is completed and withdrawal occurs, paving the way for a peace agreement between Lebanon and Israel."
