The Ukrainian Embassy in Lebanon condemned Russia's recent missile and drone attacks targeting Kyiv and cultural heritage sites, including damage to the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery.

The Embassy of Ukraine in Lebanon released a statement addressing what it described as Russia's ongoing brutal campaign against Ukrainian culture and spiritual heritage.
It reported that on the night of June 15, the Russian Federation launched a large-scale new assault using missiles and drones on Ukrainian territory. The attacks targeted Kyiv and several other Ukrainian cities and regions. The bombardment resulted in civilian casualties and injuries, as well as damage to residential buildings, civilian infrastructure, and cultural heritage sites. According to Ukrainian sources, Russia employed dozens of missiles and hundreds of attack drones during the offensive.
The embassy highlighted the particular outrage caused by the targeting of the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra monastery, one of the most prominent Christian sanctuaries globally and listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site. The Russian attack caused damage to the Dormition Cathedral, where a large fire broke out following a direct hit. Additional buildings within the monastery complex were also affected. Estimates from the Kyiv Pechersk Lavra administration indicate that at least five nationally significant landmarks sustained varying degrees of damage.
On the same night, other important cultural institutions in the Ukrainian capital were destroyed or damaged, including the Oleksandr Dovzhenko National Film Studio and the Mystetskyi Arsenal cultural and artistic complex. The Russian aggression once again demonstrated that its targets extend beyond military facilities or infrastructure to include cultural, historical, and spiritual heritage of humanity.
The embassy described the attack on Kyiv Pechersk Lavra as an act marked by exceptional audacity and disregard for religious and cultural values. Founded in the 11th century, this sacred site is among the most important centers of Eastern Christian tradition and spiritual life worldwide. Damaging this religious complex, which has endured centuries of wars and upheavals, constitutes not only a crime against Ukraine but also an assault on the shared cultural and spiritual heritage of humanity.
Ukraine stated that Russia has again proven to be disconnected from Christian values, continuing to employ brutal and bloody methods in warfare while ignoring international humanitarian law and its obligations to protect cultural property during armed conflicts. The deliberate or reckless destruction of cultural landmarks, churches, mosques, museums, and historic buildings forms an integral part of Russia's aggression against Ukraine and represents an attempt to erase Ukrainian historical memory and cultural identity, which are part of contemporary human civilization.
The embassy called upon the international community, including Lebanon, UNESCO, specialized international organizations, and partner countries, to condemn this new Russian crime against cultural heritage and to strengthen efforts to hold the Russian Federation and its leadership accountable for war crimes.
It emphasized that impunity breeds further crimes and that protecting cultural heritage is a shared responsibility of the entire civilized world.
Ukraine is currently defending not only its territory and citizens but also the global cultural and spiritual heritage against the barbarism spread by Russia wherever it operates.
