Akkar Governor Imad Labaki convened union presidents to address waste import concerns, who unanimously rejected external waste entry and demanded official notification to ministers amid unresolved environmental hazards at current sites.

Akkar Governor Imad Labaki held a meeting with the heads of municipal federations in Akkar at his office in the Halba Government Palace, attended by Secretary-General of the Governorate Rola Al-Baieh, to discuss the issue of waste transport from other regions into the governorate.
The federation heads issued a joint statement following the meeting, declaring their “categorical rejection of introducing any waste—regardless of type or origin—from outside the Akkari municipalities currently served by the officially designated sites in the governorate.”
They agreed to draft and sign a unified statement to be submitted to the Ministers of Interior and Municipalities and Environment, formally conveying their position against imposing additional environmental and public health burdens on Akkar.
The federation heads noted that the existing waste disposal locations in Akkar continue to operate as unregulated dumpsites, causing documented environmental and health damage, and have not yet been upgraded into sanitary landfills meeting required technical and safety standards.
They added that the sanitary landfill project and associated waste treatment plant remain under implementation, with completion scheduled—according to projected timelines—for February or March 2027.
