U.S. State Department: Disarming Hezbollah Is Essential for Lebanon's Security
The U.S. State Department says disarming Hezbollah is necessary for Lebanon to become a secure and sovereign nation, emphasizing that any discussion about Lebanon's future must involve the legitimate Lebanese government.
A spokesperson for the U.S. Department of State said the United States stands with the Lebanese people and wants Lebanon to be "a safe and sovereign country," adding that achieving this requires disarming Hezbollah.
The U.S. Embassy in Beirut quoted the spokesperson as saying the framework agreement states that the Lebanese government is the "sole legitimate actor" in any discussions regarding Lebanon's future on behalf of the Lebanese people.
He noted that when Hezbollah decides it is ready to disarm, it can engage with the Lebanese state, adding that Washington could then work to bridge the gap between the two sides.
However, the State Department spokesperson said Hezbollah "refuses to dialogue with Lebanon or Israel because it receives orders from Iran," according to his statement.
