Amanda Seyfried commented on Sydney Sweeney's controversial American Eagle jeans campaign while promoting their film The Housemaid.

Nearly a year after the American Eagle jeans advertisement featuring Sydney Sweeney ignited widespread online criticism, Amanda Seyfried shared her perspective on the matter. The campaign, which debuted in July 2025, attracted significant backlash due to its slogan and perceived implications.
In a recent GQ magazine interview, Amanda Seyfried addressed the controversy linked to Sydney Sweeney's American Eagle jeans ad. Seyfried recalled the experience during their promotion of the film The Housemaid amid the public reaction.
“We had a great time on the press tour,” Seyfried remarked regarding their film promotion during the period of backlash. She added, “We worked really hard and she seemed to be having fun, but I also understood that probably it can’t be f—ing easy, where she found herself… I have heard her stand up for herself, but I think she found herself between a rock and a hard place.”
The actress known for Mean Girls explained that her support for Sweeney was expressed through sharing enjoyable moments rather than discussing the controversy directly. Seyfried noted she refrained from bringing up the topic unless Sweeney, aged 28, chose to do so, as she did not want to be “a source of anything.” She also praised Sweeney for surprising her with a birthday cake and gifting her “the most beautiful bracelet.”
Throughout this period, Seyfried, aged 40, maintained her focus on promoting The Housemaid.
The 2025 denim campaign by American Eagle, starring the Euphoria actress Sydney Sweeney, featured the slogan “Sydney Sweeney Has Great Jeans.” This phrase sparked controversy as many online commentators interpreted it as a play on the similarity between “jeans” and “genes.” Critics argued the campaign might be celebrating “good genes” and accused it of relying on conventional beauty standards.
In response to the criticism, Sweeney clarified the intent behind the advertisement. In a November 2025 GQ interview, she stated, “I did a jean ad. I mean, the reaction definitely was a surprise, but I love jeans. All I wear are jeans. I’m literally in jeans and a T-shirt every day of my life.”
