An estimated $150 million loss marks the financial end of Digger, yet this outcome should not discourage Tom Cruise from pursuing ambitious cinematic ventures. The film, directed by Alejandro G. Iñárritu, faced immediate audience rejection upon release, signaling a stark departure from the actor’s recent commercial successes.

Financial Reality of Digger

Domestic gross receipts for Digger reached approximately $8 million, while worldwide earnings totaled an estimated $20 million. These figures stand in sharp contrast to the production budget, which hovered around $160 million. This cost does not account for additional marketing expenditures incurred by Warner Bros. Consequently, the project is projected to lose $150 million, a deficit that could widen if global revenue fails to surpass the $50 million threshold.

The failure stems from multiple factors, including an ambitious premise, a dramatic tonal shift, and confusing marketing strategies. Despite these issues, avoiding such high-stakes risks for the remainder of his career would constitute a significant loss for Hollywood. Cruise has spent the last 20 years primarily as an action star, known for performing his own stunts. This daredevil approach has defined his lore and added unique value to films like Mission: Impossible and Top Gun: Maverick.

Balancing Action With Artistic Risk

This critique does not condemn Cruise’s action-oriented choices. He remains effective in roles such as Ethan Hunt or Pete Mitchell, and his upcoming project, Days of Thunder 2, will likely feature him behind the wheel of a race car. However, relying solely on action mode for another decade would be tragic. The priority lies in balancing these blockbusters with diverse projects that reveal different facets of his talent.

While much of Digger’s narrative structure did not succeed, Cruise’s performance remained magnetic. His speech to the European Parliament highlighted innate charisma and star power that audiences have appreciated for over 40 years. Financially, the film is an objective failure, but creating a black satirical comedy with a complex premise and plot twist is inherently difficult. Taking this risk reminded viewers that Cruise offers more than stunt work.

There remains a possibility that Cruise could secure an Oscar nomination for Best Actor, underscoring his acting range. He can continue producing sequels like Days of Thunder 2 and Top Gun 3, but he cannot remain exclusively an action star forever. Persisting with bold attempts similar to Digger increases the likelihood of future success. The hope is that he continues to try.
